WICU12 is proud to be Erie's first television station. In March of 1949, WICU-TV signed on the air for the first time, introducing our region to the brand new world of television broadcasting.

Founder Edward Lamb, at the time owner of the Erie Dispatch-Herald, and his talented young Chief Engineer Mike Csop, built the station from the ground up, in the same location where it stands today at 3514 State Street. Their studio was the first building in the U.S. constructed as a television station and it captured national attention with a major spread in Life Magazine about small town TV.

Soon local residents were lining up to purchase television sets of their own, so that they could tune into entertainment from all four networks of the day - NBC, CBS, ABC and DuMont. Erie residents have been inviting WICU12's award winning local news staff and NBC network entertainment into their homes ever since that first broadcast.

WICU 12 has grown up with the community around us. They've chronicled Erie politics, history, economic development, sports heroes and weather events for more than six decades. The news staff is rich with seasoned journalists and engaging young talent. They show concern for their neighbors, with community projects such as feeding those in need with their Drive Thru Holiday Food Drive and hosting the Kanzius Cancer Research Telethon.

Owned today by SJL Communications, WICU12 continues to be a pioneer in the industry as the first Erie television station to broadcast local news in high definition beginning in November of 2012. They are just one facet of a very exciting multi-platform broadcast operation.
