“I was recently accused of being ‘interested in entertainment not education.' Guilty as charged,” says Bob Chitester, President and CEO of Free To Choose Network. “Most people won't read The Road to Serfdom or Free To Choose, but will devote many hours a week to entertainment and leisure pursuits. We have to reach them where they live.”

Bob Chitester with Milton Friedman

Free To Choose Network has been reaching people where they live with a combination of education and entertainment for many years now. From 1966-1982, Chitester was Founding President of WQLN, Erie's local PBS station. During his tenure, the station focused on the local community, serving Erie's needs, even becoming the first station to provide live coverage of local sports. In the late 1970s, Bob approached Nobel Laureate economist Milton Friedman to do a television series showcasing Friedman's ideas about free-market economics. Free To Choose, the award-winning PBS series that aired in 1980, and the namesake of Friedman's book and Chitester's organization, was the result of their collaboration.

Through its award-winning documentaries for public TV and FreeToChoose.tv, Free To Choose Network continues to bring dramatic and entertaining stories of the benefits of freedom to millions of viewers worldwide from their headquarters in Erie, PA.

“Our focus,” says Chitester, “is to showcase triumphant stories of the human spirit, of people emerging from poverty, on the winning ideas of personal, economic, and political freedom that reflect humans' desire to make tomorrow better than today.”
