How It All Began

On April 1, 1954, Henry and Barbara Burhenn opened Burhenn's Pharmacy. They would spend all day at the pharmacy. Barbara would even cook their meals in the basement so Henry would be available to the customers. The Burhenn name has been well known in the pharmacy industry for many years, as Henry was the former president of the Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association in 1964. He was also a distinguished alumni from the University of Pittsburgh receiving many awards and accolades.

The Burhenn family offers services such as prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, drive-thru pick up, as well as free residential delivery to their ever-expanding consumer base. They are only one of very few pharmacies in the area that offer free same day delivery. Although with the increase in gas it has become more costly for the pharmacy to do so, the Burhenn's recognize the importance of one's medication and the fact that not everyone is capable of making their way into the pharmacy to get their prescription.

In 2003, Burhenn's Pharmacy made their current location at 861 East 38th Street home. There is no better feeling than the sense of home from the minute you step foot inside. Burhenn's is the place where everybody knows your name. What sets Burhenn's Pharmacy apart is the lasting relationships established here; the third generations of the customers that Henry took care of several years ago come here today. This notoriety is one factor that has enabled them great success in order for them to celebrate their 60th anniversary this year.

Family Commitment to Success

The Burhenn's have a staff of 20 employees committed to excellence, many of which illustrate their loyalty to the Burhenn name as they have been employed with the company for over 25 years. The ownership and management roles have been passed down through the family much like the baton in the 400 meter relays at the Olympic Games. In 1965 and 1966, Ray and Karl, sons of Henry and Barbara took over the role of managing the business after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh. Because their sons were able to keep up with the speed of the business and didn't drop the baton, Henry was able to retire in 1971.

Now, in its third generation, Mike and his two sisters Barbara and Michelle are running the pharmacy. “It is interesting to see if the legacy will continue on with any of the seven children in the 4th generation,” says Michael Burhenn. “We are excited to see what paths they are going to take in the future to see if this is something that we can continue to pass on in Henry's honor.”

The future of Burhenn's Pharmacy

“We attribute much of our success over the past three generations to what my grandfather Henry instilled in us, and that was to give excellent customer service as well as a commitment to care about our customers like they are family,” says Michael Burhenn. “Our motto is “your family's heath is our family's concern”. We hope to grow our current consumer base of approximately 400-500 customers in the future as we strive to uphold the values set forth by my grandparents nearly 60 years ago.How It All Began
