As the 20th Century drew to a close, a group of visionary physicians founded a hospital that has come to create an indelible mark upon the betterment of community health and wellness throughout northwestern Pennsylvania. Millcreek Community Hospital (MCH) was established by six founding physicians who were possessed of the courageously astute prescience and vigilant observation to envision a hospital dedicated to offering patient-centered, compassionate care in the whole-person osteopathic tradition. The founders would be proud to know that MCH has evolved into a 218-bed medical care complex offering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services and 24-hour emergency care. Millcreek Community Hospital, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), and Medical Associates of Erie (MAE) comprise the vibrant heart of the only osteopathic academic health center in the nation.

Millcreek Community Hospital is a recognized leader in:

Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. — The hospital trains orthopedic surgery residents and sports medicine fellows who, along with LECOM sports medicine physicians, serve as team physicians for the Erie BayHawks, the Erie Otters, and the intercollegiate athletic teams of Mercyhurst University.

Behavioral Health Services for Adolescents, Adults, and Seniors — including a partial hospitalization program and specialized units. — The ratio of staff to patients ensures that care is administered proficiently. Millcreek Community Hospital offers the only osteopathic psychiatric residency program in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Senior Services and Geriatric Care. — The senior services encompass a unit providing Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE), a Transitional Care Unit (TCU), and Millcreek Manor.

Medical Education. — Millcreek Community Hospital has trained interns and residents for decades, and it offers more physician post-doctoral programs than any other hospital headquartered in northwestern Pennsylvania. Its Medical Education department offers seven residency and four fellowship programs, as well as a pharmacy residency program. Millcreek Community Hospital also serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM).

Medical Associates of Erie - the clinical practices of LECOM. — With 14 locations, some providing patient care in underserved neighborhoods, these practices serve thousands of patients annually. The LECOM Institute for Successful Aging, a part of MAE, offers complete geriatric clinical care under the direction of fellowship trained specialists. The Institute and the Hospital are changing health care significantly for older patients with the introduction of a rehabilitation clinic, a wound clinic, and the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) patient care program.

LECOM Senior Living Center. — The Institute is advancing the next generation of care for older adults with a new, 144-bed Senior Living Center adjacent to MCH. The new Center will replace the Millcreek Manor skilled nursing facility. With a full-service pharmacy, spa, beauty salon, and restaurant, the Center will present a superlative alternative to traditional nursing homes. Rooms will be grouped in “neighborhoods” of 18, offering residents a more communal, home-like environment while allowing staff to serve residents more effectively.

The John M. Ferretti and Silvia Ferretti Medical Fitness and Wellness Center. — The Wellness Center, located on the growing Peach Street campus, has been named “the number one fitness facility” in Erie. With college-trained fitness experts on staff and with abundant state-of-the-art equipment in house, the Wellness Center offers personal training, the latest group fitness programs, and healthful lifestyle lectures. Medical offices and a physical therapy clinic are available where patients are afforded convenient access to further treatment and rehabilitation.

Indeed, the legacy of Millcreek Community Hospital encompasses the creation of LECOM. The journey began in September of 1988, when the Board of Trustees of Millcreek Community Hospital conducted a major strategic planning retreat. Recognizing a forthcoming physician shortage, attendees at the planning session established a new hospital mission that emphasized the need for educating osteopathic physicians to provide medical services to the medically underserved areas across northwestern Pennsylvania and one that would assist the hospital in maintaining its leadership in the delivery of health care locally. After welcoming its first class of fewer than 40 Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine students in 1993, LECOM has grown to become the largest medical school in the nation. LECOM offers affordable, superlative quality, Medical, Pharmacy, and Dental programs.

By remaining true to the vision of its founders — inculcating a compassionate, “whole person” approach to care, encompassing mind, body, and spirit — and through its dedicated team of physicians, Millcreek Community Hospital remains positioned ideally in the vanguard of community service and health care delivery throughout the region. As the 20th Century drew to a close, a group of visionary physicians founded a hospital that has come to create an indelible mark upon the betterment of community health and wellness throughout northwestern Pennsylvania.
