Redesigning Health Care in Erie

Saint Vincent Hospital is Erie's first hospital and continues to be a leader in the delivery of high quality health care in the northwestern Pennsylvania region. Saint Vincent's strong commitment to clinical quality, advances in technology and high levels of patient satisfaction have earned it national recognition by top health care organizations.

Today, Saint Vincent joins the Allegheny Health Network to focus on redesigning the way health care is delivered to increase patient access, provide the highest quality care at the lowest cost and create a better overall patient experience. It all starts by ensuring that patients receive the right level of care at the right time in the right setting.

Patient Centered Medical Home Care

Health care in the new millennium has seen a shift from inpatient care to outpatient settings. It has also seen a demand from the consumer for better-coordinated care, which results in a more satisfying experience. As the health care system becomes driven by patient outcomes and value rather than volume, medicine must shift its focus on not just fixing what may be wrong with a patient, but on keeping a patient well.

Saint Vincent administrators, physicians, nurses and support staff have been working to meet this demand over a period of several years. Most of the hospital's primary care practices are certified or will become certified as Patient-Centered Medical Homes. In this new model of care, the patient becomes the focus or the center with groups of doctors, specialists and health care providers who work together to keep the patient healthy.

Saint Vincent has invested in electronic medical records, redesigned patient scheduling and has trained staff members in providing a concierge-type of medical experience for patients. As the transformation continues, the goal of patient satisfaction and a healthy community remains the focus.

A Strong Saint Vincent = A Strong Erie Community

Saint Vincent's partnership with the Allegheny Health Network has a direct benefit to the Erie community. Together the two organizations have a shared vision in providing high quality care at the lowest possible cost. The new delivery system will not only provide greater efficiency but it will provide greater competition in the health care market. Patients can make the informed choice on their health care provider.

As one of the largest employers in Erie, Saint Vincent also provides a variety of employment opportunities from the highly specialized to the skilled labor force to entry-level positions. As a result, Saint Vincent continues to have a strong economic impact in the Erie community.

Taking Health Care on the Road

Saint Vincent is working to bring health care to the Erie community. Often times, specialized care is only available in larger health care systems that are miles and hours away. That is something Saint Vincent and the Allegheny Health Network are changing.

Together with the Allegheny Health Network, Saint Vincent is able to recruit top physicians who bring their specialized care to Saint Vincent. For some, that means a specialty never before offered is now available at Saint Vincent, here in Erie where patients and their families live.

Saint Vincent, in partnership with the Sisters of St. Joseph of NW Pennsylvania, operates a Mobile Medical Unit where health care can be taken “on the road!” The Mobile Medical Unit is a state-of-the-art physician's office on wheels.

Patients remain our focus. Saint Vincent stands true to our mission in delivering the highest quality care to all.
