UPMC HAMOT. A LEGACY OF SERVICE.

On July 1, 1881, a small hospital named for its founding family and converted from their homestead was opened on Front Street, forever changing the course and quality of life for the 74,000 people living in Erie County. One hundred thirty years later, Hamot Medical Center affiliated with UPMC, the largest health system in Pennsylvania and, with more than 60,000 employees, the common-wealth's largest employer. Today, more than 1 million people in the medical center's service area have ready access to the care of one of the nation's top health systems, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. And it's available where our patients desire it most: close to home at UPMC Hamot.

Quantified commitment to quality

In the decades leading up to the UPMC affiliation, Hamot distinguished itself as a tertiary referral center recognized for continually offering advanced procedures and new technologies. As part of its 2002 Millennium Project, the medical center created the Hamot Heart Institute, Hamot Orthopaedic Institute, and John E. Britton Trauma Center, refining these core competencies and setting the stage for clinical excellence that was soon recognized on a national level by numerous awards from organizations specializing in evaluating health care organizations. In addition to being named Best Regional Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, UPMC Hamot is the only hospital in our region to be recognized among the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation by Thomson Reuters, now Truven Health Analytics. And, for the ninth time since it was founded, the UPMC Hamot Heart Institute was named one of the Top 50 Cardiovascular Programs in the nation by Truven Health Analytics in 2013. These national accolades confirmed what hundreds of thousands of patients have already learned: that UPMC Hamot is at the forefront of sophisticated, advanced health care.

Revolutionizing Women's Health

Pioneering new and refined clinical capabilities continues to distinguish UPMC Hamot today. The UPMC Hamot Women's Hospital opened in 2011, concentrating superior-quality women and children's health services in a dedicated facility. The UPMC Hamot Women's Hospital is founded upon a commitment to keeping families together and centralizing services to create an optimally comfortable, secure, and positive environment. A new pediatrics unit opened in that facility in 2013, bringing families and loved ones together in an extraordinary environment of healing. In collaboration with Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, specialists work closely to offer advanced care in such areas as maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and high-risk pregnancy.

Ongoing cardiac innovation

The Heart Institute at UPMC Hamot currently offers the widest range of specialized cardiac services in our region. These include the only dedicated regional valve center, peripheral vascular center, heart failure clinic, and cardiac ER. The Heart Institute at UPMC Hamot has also introduced more new procedures and capabilities to our area than any other heart hospital in northwest Pennsylvania, such as endoCABG®, carotid artery stenting, peripheral vascular stenting, and, most recently, transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

Coordinated patient care

As a complement to these clinical achievements, the medical center has implemented an eRecord conversion with the support of UPMC, resulting in new efficiencies in sharing patient data to ultimately improve process performance, coordination of care, and patient safety. UPMC expertise also has provided the opportunity to improve throughput in our Emergency Department that, with an annual intake of 80,000 patients, is the second-busiest in the UPMC system. Collaboration with efficiency experts has enabled us to cut the median length of stay for emergency patients and make quantified improvements in patient satisfaction.

Employment and economic growth

UPMC Hamot continues to play a vital role as one of the largest employers in the county, and steward of the community. Presently, the UPMC Hamot medical staff is composed of more than 480 physicians, including 230 members of the UPMC Hamot Physician Network. The hospital now employs more than 3,000 people who benefit from a variety of educational assistance programs that include scholarships, tuition assistance, and continuing medical education programs.

Vital links with regional partners

UPMC Hamot's commitment to quality and vision for growth in the tristate region has resulted in strong relationships with regional hospitals. While there is a firm belief that quality care should be delivered locally whenever possible, UPMC Hamot continues to establish more treatment pathways for patients and better access to affordable medical services for our outlying communities when a higher level of care is necessary. The medical center now has agreements in place with regional providers throughout northwest Pennsylvania and western New York.

Reaching out to people in need

UPMC Hamot also has opened the first school-based health service in northwest Pennsylvania, Wayne Primary Care. This vital facility addresses basic needs of a segment of our community that is more likely to suffer chronic illnesses, depend upon emergency services, and be unable to afford health care. Wayne Primary Care connects the medical home with the educational home, and helps to eliminate barriers entailed in transportation, timing, and scheduling. The facility is connecting people to primary care physicians and effecting a notable reduction in emergency visits among the population it serves.

Promoting partnerships for children's care

UPMC Hamot is also helping our partners help area children. Physicians from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC are performing outpatient subspecialty procedures at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Erie. And when inpatient care is necessary, UPMC Hamot is providing a venue for these surgeries, along with facilities for overnight stays for Shriners' patients and their families.
